China’s gross domestic product rose 7.4% year over year in the first quarter–down from 7.7% growth in the fourth quarter of last year, China’s National Bureau of Statistics said Wednesday.

The increase was more than a median 7.3% gain forecast by 16 economists in a survey by The Wall Street Journal.

The economy expanded 1.4% quarter over quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis, the statistics bureau said.
